(Companion story to "Jesus Bus")
Sunday School teacher Dot Knight has reluctantly agreed to bus "those nasty Odums children" halfway across the county to Bible school in her brand-new car. Vowing to keep the kids from ruining her new car, Dot is tooling right along when suddenly the engine seizes up and she is stuck in 100% heat with Sister and the baby and their twin brats in the back seat. Dot is frantic, half hoping somebody will stop and help her and half hoping some threatening people don't stop. She knows the danger from TV. Then a car with two black men do stop and Dot is left with some dangerous choices...

Dot Knight was saved a year ago, but it's a thorn in her side to have to drive the Odums children, Sister, the baby and the twins, to Bible School at her country church. Dot has a new 1996 Bonneville and although the reverend doesn't know it, "she'd as soon go to hell as have those little devils in her new car again,..." (Loc 13) Dot doesn't especially like the Odums children because they are frequently wearing dirty clothes and not always bathed. They are poor children from Statenville, GA and they tend to spill things in her car and get dirt on the seats. Sister, the oldest, always has the baby with her, and although it's the mother's baby, she is responsible for keeping her.Dot keeps a watchful eye on the twin boys in the backseat because they had spilled grape Kool-aid on it and she had to scrub her fingers nearly to the bone to get it out. As Dot continues to drive to her church, she gets the Bonneville up to 70 mph when something happens to the steering and she is off on the side of the road with the car broken down. And whatever is Dot, saved a year ago, going to do when a car stops to help and backs up with two black men in it?
For one thing, she "gets her pocketbook out and hooks it on one thick wrist, then goes around the hot ticking car hood, nylons rasping together with enough friction to set her thighs on fire." (Loc 9) Dot is also afraid of what her pastor will think if she allows the N-word people in her car to try to fix it. How Dot gets her car fixed and what the Odums children do will be quite a surprise for her in the end.
"Vacation Bible School" is a story that allows the reader to take a look at someone who professes to have been saved, loves the Lord and then puts conditions of her own on the way she looks at people and the way she treats them, the being saved part set aside.
Sister and her baby sister and twin brothers are also characters in much more depth in Janice Daugharty's wonderful novel, "Like a Sister." This short story and its companion story, "Jesus Bus" are highly recommended, as is "Like a Sister."

Dot mistakenly believes she can go to hell for the way she treats the children she picks up for Vacation Bible School. If sin can send you to hell after accepting Jesus, what then did he die for? Just sayin'...
She can't very well tell Brother Rauls how she really feels about having those sticky smelly Odums children in her sparkling white Pontiac. After her car breaks down on the side of the road and a black-skinned and a brown-skinned man try to help and then offer a ride, the Odums all get in their car while Dot refuses to but not before making nasty side comments to the eldest Odums girl about those men.
She certainly is a prejudiced woman but then she's prejudiced in a loving Christian way. That's got to be alright. Right?
